REASONS FOR MAKING THE
ENERGY DECISION-MAKING GUIDES

Households in the Upper Skeena community named several common struggles such as:

  • The payment of utility bills for heat and power

  • The amounts of power black and brown outs

  • The costs of not having dependable power (i.e. loss of fridges and freezers)

  • The lack of backup options for when power is lost (the volume of power outages in the Upper Skeena is higher than other regions of BC)

Another major realization was that a large component of residents struggled with energy loss due to inefficient homes. These issues come from aged out, old housing infrastructure like doors, windows, poor ventilation, insufficient insulation (R – Value), and heating systems that were not working well, not the right size, and/or expensive to operate.

We have developed three practical Decision-Making Guides for region specific heating options and renewable energy technologies to start the transition to a low carbon energy future.

The goal of this collaborative work is to empower Upper Skeena communities with the tools and information needed to transition to a cleaner, low carbon future through these practical guides.

Within the Upper Skeena Decision Making Matrix, our team has collected the most objective and up to date information on these energy topics with real, ready-to-go solutions made specifically for the Upper Skeena region. However, as technology changes and improves, we intend to update the information on the website as needed.

WHAT ARE THESE GUIDES FOR?

The idea for the creation of these energy guides came from having community conversations about energy security and the struggles in finding solutions to housing issues through the vast sea of information that can make decision making very difficult.

These guides lay out the options that are available for home heating and renewable energy technologies and explain each to help you make an informed decision.
